Planning first Austin area vacation in March

My husband and I will be visiting the Austin area for the first time in the third or fourth week in March. The main attractions will be golf and exploring as much of the area as possible, especially the Hill Country (for possible future retirement). Our ideal place to stay would be a reasonably priced condo, cottage or balcony/patio suite with a great water view and/or on or adjacent to a nice golf course. The Lakenights Luxury Vacation suites in Lago Vista looks nice from their website--does anyone know anything about it? Also saw some beautiful places on Horseshoe Bay (near Robert Trent Jones courses) on VRBO, though most a little too large, and saw some other postings indicating that the New Braunfels area has exceptional golf. Any recommendations suggestions would be much appreciated to help us to narrow down our choices. Also, what is the typical weather like at that time? Thanks much!!

I can%26#39;t comment on the golf courses/accommodations, but the weather here should be in the 70s or 80s and perhaps wet, so bring an umbrella and a jacket. Occasionally we get a cold snap in the spring, so you might check right before you come to see if you need to bring a coat.

Have fun!

Thanks austinite--I wasn%26#39;t expecting it would be that warm, but warmer is better!

I think we%26#39;ve narrowed our accommodations search to the Lake Travis area. The Lakenights suite is actually a private villa in a resort called ';The Island on Lake Travis';. Another interesting resort is ';The World of Tennis'; in Lakeway. If anyone can comment on either of those resorts or other suggestions in the Lake Travis area that would be great.

Only comment would be that Lago Vista area is on the North side of the lake and a bad bet for being able to check out Austin as well. New Braunfels is not the best gofl destination, though Hyatt Hill Country outside of San Antonio is nice. I would lean towards Lake Travis area near Lakeway or Barton Creek Lakeside. The World of Tennis resort is quite old but has been recently purchased and in the process of upgrading. You might ask for current pictures and such.

Also, unless we receive some much needed rainfall, the lake (Travis) is very low. Ther Highland lakes are a series of constant level and reservoir lakes alternating. The Horseshoe Bay area is on a constant level lake. Lake Travis is a fluctuating level reservoir lake and is at a 30 year low right now.

I went to a wedding at the Barton Creek Country Club and they had a nice hotel and golf/tennis. That is a more central location than Lakeway--the lake is a ways from the rest of Austin. New Braunfels is about 45 miles from Austin, so that is really a separate trip. But if you are going to New Braunfels, Newcombe%26#39;s tennis ranch has some great programs and some cabin type accomodations.

If proximity to Austin is not your biggest issue, I would choose a lakeside location because I love Lake Travis! If you want to see the rest of Austin, I would go Barton Creek.

FYI, the N.Braunfels area having exceptional golf might be a stretch. The have a fairly new course, which is pretty difficult, called The Bandit. Other than that, you%26#39;d probaby have to drive somewhere else for golf on the level of what is around Austin. Barton Creek, mentioned above, is just about top-of-the-line. If you%26#39;re interested in golf try there, Falcohead, Circle C Ranch. Austin is a great golf destination. We played Lago Vista a few yrs ago and wasn%26#39;t that impressed, but I%26#39;ve heard they%26#39;ve put some money into it the past few yrs. Horseshoe Bay is also a great golf destination, with 3 exceptional courses, Ram Rock, Apple Rock, and Slick Rock. All rank pretty high in Texas. Marble Falls, the town closest, is very lively on the weekends, catching a lot of Austin traffic coming out for the weekend.
