Wyndham Garden Hotel

Has anyone stayed here. I will be in McAllen for 3 days in March. Is the location good. Anything would be appreciated.

Wyndham Garden Hotel

Stayed there two weeks ago. It is the old Four Points Sheraton.

No Liquor license or on site dinning available. Renovations in processs. Clean %26amp; nice staff. Not 3***!!!

Wyndham Garden Hotel

I%26#39;m writing all this on the assumption that you%26#39;ll have access to a rental or some other form of transportation. Public transportation is spotty and cabs are unreliable and pricey.

I haven%26#39;t personally stayed here, as I live in the area, but it is a nice enough hotel. It%26#39;s a pretty good location, about a stone%26#39;s throw from the airport and the La Plaza Mall. Several chain restaurants nearby also, such as Logan%26#39;s, Tony Roma%26#39;s, Chili%26#39;s, Red Lobster, etc.

Also, if you%26#39;re a steak eater, you%26#39;ll want to try Santa Fe Steakhouse which is on 10th Street near the IHOP. It%26#39;s easy to miss, but you%26#39;ll be rewarded if you find it. I recommend the bar, as it%26#39;s full service, and there%26#39;s live music Wed-Sat, I believe. If you do choose the bar, get there early as it fills up fast.

There%26#39;s a golf course just to the north of the hotel, but I%26#39;m pretty sure it%26#39;s private. Could be wrong, though.

We also have a couple minor league sports teams just a bit down the road. The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees play hockey, and the Rio Grande Valley Dorados play arena football. Both teams reside in the Dodge Arena which has become a very popular concert destination.

There%26#39;s not much for nightlife in this area, as most of the night clubs are up around Nolana in the northern part of the city. As a family man, I%26#39;m not real familiar with which ones are hot right now, but I%26#39;m sure if you ask around, someone can help with that.

There%26#39;s a small independent theatre called the Cine El Rey not far from where you%26#39;ll be staying as well. Most recently, they were showing the movie Volver before any of the mainstream theatres were. They also have plays and shows from time to time. There are also mainstream theaters as well. Check Fandango for those.

If you%26#39;re into shopping and have some time to kill while the sun%26#39;s out, I%26#39;d suggest heading up to the old downtown area of McAllen. It%26#39;s a large area bordered by 4 main streets: 10th Street (east border), Bicentennial (west), Business 83 (north), and Houston Ave (south). The bulk of the stores are along Main Street, between Business 83 and Fresno Ave. I%26#39;d suggest staying between Business 83 and Chicago, however.

This got a lot longer than I expected, but I hope it helps, anyway...

I%26#39;m staying here right now. It%26#39;s a decent hotel--clean, very helpful staff, good (free) hot breakfast, good location. It%26#39;s near the airport, so you%26#39;ll occasionally hear planes at night, but it%26#39;s not a big problem. The rooms are big, the beds comfortable, and free wireless internet. The fitness center only has a few machines, but they%26#39;re relatively new and it%26#39;s not busy. There%26#39;s a big flat screen TV in the room, which is nice. I travel a lot, and this is on par with a Marriott Courtyard, but somehow I like this better because it%26#39;s different. The walls are thicker and you don%26#39;t hear people outside your room or upstairs taking a shower!

I guess I can%26#39;t correct my post from a few days ago, but I have a totally different opinion after 3 days in this hotel. I usually only stay at a hotel for a night, so I don%26#39;t get to experience how longer term guests seem to be at the lowest end of the priority list.. The second day, I tried to get into my room and was locked out. Apparently, the key was only activated for one night. This also happened to a colleague of mine. I told them there were bolts on the floor of the exercise room off of the eliptical machine, which could be dangerous, that never got fixed. They forgot to restock my regular coffee. I HAD NO TOWELS after I returned from a long, cold day of work, (5:30 pm) hopped in for a nice hot shower, and reached for a towel when there was none. Then, this morning, I got my wake up call at 4:30 am instead of 5.

And don%26#39;t ask for restaurant recommendations...the place they sent us to for a business dinner was filled with noisy children and watered-down margaritas.

I%26#39;ll be at the Marriott Courtyard next time! What was I thinking???
