Inexpensive Mexican restaurant suggestions??

Hi!

We are planning a spur of the moment trip next weekend. Since it has not been a ';planned'; trip we will have to be on a budget for our meals. We LOVE mexican food and could probably eat it every meal and enjoy every bite. Any suggestions? We will probably be staying at the Omni near the medical district. We will have a car so don%26#39;t mind driving either.

Thanks!!!

My favorite Mexican food restaurant when we lived in the med center area was Martha%26#39;s at Babcock and Eckhert. We ate there often, on a medical student%26#39;s ';budget';. Last I heard it was still open. However, we moved away 8 years ago so my information may not be up-to-date. Hopefully a San Antonio local expert will swoop in to the rescue!

There%26#39;s also a perennial favorite Alamo Cafe on I-10W near Wurzbach: www.alamocafe.com

Enjoy!

Near the Omni and the Medical Center area I would suggest Blanco Cafe on Fredericksburg and Medical. They have good inexpensive Mexican food and their enchiladas are excellent. Cha Cha%26#39;s on Babcock between Louis Pasteur and Wurzbach is also pretty good and not too expensive. Ajuua on Huebner at Vance Jackson is fairly good and has a lively bar atmosphere at night with Latin music.

The very best Mexican food at a reasonable price in San Antonio is at El Maracumbe, which is on the Northeast side of town...a bit of a drive from where you will be but oh so well worth it. I%26#39;ve lived here 21 years and have been to almost every single mexican restaurant in this city at least once, and El Maracumbe is my favorite. It is located on Harry Wurzbach in a shopping center that faces the Austin Highway also. The second best mexican food in SA, in my opinion, is at La Vina, but it will be a drive as well. It is located on Roosevelt Street in Southeast SA. It doesn%26#39;t have much of an ambience but the food is outstanding and cheap! It has been my experience that the best mexican food in this city isn%26#39;t usually found at the big name, well known touristy spots...but more at the lesser known, smaller, simpler Mom %26amp; Pop places. At La Vina...be sure to ask for ';corn'; tortillas, instead of the typical flour ones. There corn tortillas are to die for.

One of our favorites is Pico de Gallo (relatively inexpensive), which is not too far from the Mexican Marketplace. We also like Mi Tierra which is in the Marketplace, although some people would say it is too touristy. We have also eaten at Mexican Manhattan along the Riverwalk in an area a bit off the beaten path; it was good. If you are adventurous, go out I-270 (North) and just before the intersection with Blanco Road, on the left side is El Jarro de Arturo - their food is great and it is a little more upscale. We got married in San Antonio a few years ago at the Southwest School of Art and Craft and had El Jarro cater the dinner - everyone left full and happy. Incidentally, we had our post-wedding brunch at Pico de Gallo.
