Austin in January

2 middle-aged music tragics from Melbourne Australia planning to visit for 2-3 days around January 12, 2007.

Will there be plenty of live music happening at that time of year?

Austin in January

Howdy, mates! Welcome to Austin. Sorry I didn%26#39;t write sooner but I%26#39;m not the best expert on live music and there are many folks here who know more about it than me. The websites in the previous post are great places for info. I%26#39;d also suggest you pick up a copy of the Austin Chronicle when you get in town. It%26#39;s a free weekly newspaper and it will have the latest info on what kind of music is playing where for what price. You can also check it on the internet:

www.auschron.com

Hope that wasn%26#39;t already posted!

By the way, if you%26#39;re interested in a cold Foster%26#39;s or any other kind of beer, Austin has an awesome beer scene! On Sixth Street, try Little Woodrow%26#39;s, Maggie Mae%26#39;s, or Opal Devines for wide selection of imported beers available on draught, right next to a lot of great Texas microbrews. There%26#39;s also the Ginger Man, which I haven%26#39;t been to in a long time but is recommended frequently here.

Hope you enjoy your visit! G%26#39;day!

There%26#39;s ALWAYS live music in Austin! Just go downtown! And yes, keep an eye on the websites listed in the other reviews.

Thanks everyone - just got back to Oz from the good ol%26#39; USA where we had a ball!

Austin was terrific - we avoided the ice storm and had a day of rain followed by a day of warm sunshine - just like Melbourne!

Found some great music - Broken Spoke, Antone%26#39;s for Billy Joe Shaver and Ray Wylie Hubbard were highlights.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post your music highlights. Do you mind sharing where you ended up staying?

We stayed at the Hampton Inn at 200 San Jacinto (cnr. of Second) just for the proximity to Sixth St. and it is not too expensive.

It was fine - the usual Hampton Inn standard - and the location turned out to be what we wanted - close to Sixth and also the river for a walk/jog. It was also an easy walk to South Congress (Threadgill%26#39;s, Continental, Guerro%26#39;s Taco Bar etc.)

The Driskill would have been nice but was beyond my budget!

We did have brunch there in the Cafe - which was really nice.

A Melbourne acquaintance suggested the ';legendary'; Austin Motel on SoCo (opposite the Continental) and it certainly looked funky when we walked by. The San Jose Hotel on SoCo also looked good - and it has good reviews in Tripadvisor.
