Dogs - camping Big Bend

If you%26#39;ve been recently - can you take your dog(s)? We are RV%26#39;ing for a week based out of Rio Grande Village, and understood we can take into the campground but not on the trails. Is that right?

We%26#39;ve got 2 small kids so we%26#39;re not going to be hiking far anyway.! And they%26#39;d probably be a tastier treat for any wandering predator :)

We went camping there once, and I know I checked into it, and the answer was no-- because like you said, their scent will attract predators, especially wolves.....But we were primative camping....You might want to just call the park and double check...there may be certian areas they are allowed.

I found this info on the NPS website www.nps.gov/bibe/planyourvisit/pets.htm

Be aware that having a pet with you will limit your activities and explorations in the park. In addition, desert temperatures and predators are a serious threat to your pet%26#39;s well being. Please consider the following points before deciding to bring a pet:

Pets are not allowed on trails, off roads, or on the river. Basically, your pet can only go where your car can go.

If you plan to hike, someone must stay behind with the pet, or you will need to make arrangements with a kennel service.

Pet owners are required to immediately remove and properly dispose of fecal matter deposited by their pets. Deposit bag of fecal matter in a dumpster.

Pets need to be on a leash no longer than six feet in length (or in a cage) at all times.

You are not allowed to leave your pet unattended in vehicles if it creates a danger to the animal, or if the animal becomes a public nuisance. There is no kennel service in the park.

Pet etiquette and park regulations require that you always clean up after your pet and dispose of waste in trash receptacles.

Predators such as owls, coyotes, mountain lions and even javelina can and do kill pets here. Even large dogs cannot defend themselves against predators. Extreme temperatures are also a danger.

Your pet will be much happier at home!

Just an update for future reference... yes you can take your dog. However I really would not. They are only allowed where the car can go i.e. not on ANY trails. You also can not leave them unattended in your trailer/tent. The ranegrs have posted pictures of a dog attacked in the campground by a wild javelina - costs of over $300, fiens, and 2 hour+ journey to the nearest vet.

Fido will be much happier at home!
