Galveston & Marte Gras

My family of 4 (2 small children) will be coming to galveston for a get-a-way weekend. We are debating on whether to come on the first weekend of feb.or to wait and come on the 9-11 during Mardi gras.

How family friendly is the Mardi Gras? Or is it so crowded that it would be more hastle with a 6 %26amp; 8 year old.

Galveston Island will be packed during Mardi Gras- there is one or two kid friendly parades during the day, but most of the action is not what I would call kid-friendly.

However, Kemah has a very kid friendly Mardi Gras celebration the weekend of Feb. 16-18. It has a boat parade, with beads, etc. I used to take my son there when he was little, and we both had a great time.

If those are your only two choices for weekends (1st weekend or 9-11) I would stick with the first weekend, and avoid Mardi Gras with the little one%26#39;s.

If you take the kids to Mardi Gras - go early in the morning when they first open the shops. The wild partiers show up later in the day and at night. Early in the morning you can walk around freely before it gets elbow to elbow. Lots of early birds will throw beads from the balconies - particularly to children. That way you have a few hours to enjoy it before it gets overly crowded. Crowd starts moving in around noon to 1 p.m.

You all would love the parades but not the ones on the Strand with kids

I never have gone to the strand parades even without my kids. I go every year (passed seven years) to the seawall free parades and never had problems during the day or night. The kids stand on their own or in the stroller. Along the seawall there are some spots with more of a crowd but get there early enough and set out your spot with chairs and you will be set.
