Quiet Hotel in San Antonio, but with walking distance.

Please can someone recommend a quiet hotel in San Antonio within walking distance to Riverwalk. We are staying 3 nights -2 adults - Price about $200 per room per night maximum in April 2007.

Quiet Hotel in San Antonio, but with walking distance.

When in April are you planning your visit? If it%26#39;s durrring Fiesta, April 20-29,nowhere downtown will be quiet. Outside of that window things should be great at any of the hotels.

Your budget should give you the choice of many hotels. You can usually get a 4-star hotel on Hotwire for about $125 if you%26#39;re willing to gamble on the exact hotel.

Thanks for reply. We will be there from April 19th for 3 nights.

Not sure about hotwire, would like a named hotel any further suggestions.

Hi Budsey

Try the Hawthorn Suites Riverwalk. A quiet location and a 20 minutes walk along the Riverwalk to down town. Or go by boat (stops at the Hawthorn). Try a riverview room with a large balcony.

Tet

Check out the Marriott Plaza San Antonio....

We were just in San Antonio and looked at a lot of the Bed and Breakfasts on Madison Street and a few streets close to Madison. There are a total of about 10 B%26amp;B in old mansions. They are in residential neighborhoods therefore do not have traffic noises.

Those B%26amp;B are close the the Guenther House Restaurant (often recommended by those in the know, see Guenther website), the river walk and are also served by the public transportation trolleys. Rosario Mexican Food is also in the neighborhood. It was recently in the Texas Monthly as a place to get one of the best tacos in Texas.

We also saw the Holiday Inn Express ($169 plus 16.75% tax) and the Amerisuites ($134 plus tax) both on Navarro Street. The Marriott was also in the neighborhood. All of the above are within easy walking distance of each other but the hotels were on heavily traveled streets.

All of the above are also close to Amtrak Train station but not within walking distance (about $5 by taxi.)

  • Coming in Jnauary for NHL All star game

We are from Alberta,Canada and coming for 2 nights to go to NHL game and we are staying at Courtyard by Marriott.......Market center. Is there any shopping close by as we won%26#39;t have a vehicle? Also are there any restaurants or attractions of any kinds near by? What about casinos? We will be at the hockey game Wed night but not sure what we will do the rest of the time thanks;-)

Coming in Jnauary for NHL All star game

Oops was supposed to be January lol and I forgot to ask what is the weather like there that month? We are coming from a bunch of snow so I am sure that will be a treat hahaha

Coming in Jnauary for NHL All star game

You will be in an area that is not good for walking to restaurants- it is right along the freeway. One good thing- you are next to the Hilton Anatole so you could eat at one of their restaurants. You could take a cab over to the West End (chain resturants, bars, Dallas World Aquarium)- or walk over after the hockey game- or downtown (Union Station, Reunion Tower) and catch DART rail from there to other places around town (North Park mall, Dallas Zoo). There is also an area called Uptown with lots of restaurants and some shops- you could take a cab there and use the Mckinney Avenue Trolley (www.mata.org)to ride around and see some of Dallas.

    Texas doesn%26#39;t have any casinos.

Who knows what the weather wil be like!!! Yesterday it was 80; next week it could be 30...it%26#39;s very unpredictable.

What kind of shopping are you looking for?

I like the outlet malls or any mall doesn%26#39;t really matter but I LOVE SHOPPING! LOL Also are there any casinos at all in Dallas?

The nearest casinos are in Oklahoma - about an hour, or so, away.

Many like Grapevine Mills for outlet shopping. But honestly...I never find anything great. In January, you are going to find first-run clothing at major sale prices at any mall - Northpark is my fave and second is Galleria.

we now live in Dallas, formerly from Calgary. The city will be hopping during that time-not quite sure what type of shopping you are looking for but you will likely need to rent a car-or perhaps lite rail DART will get you there. Let me know what you are looking for like a mall or Target-upscale or cheap-Dallas has everything but is definitely a driving city

As you can see-Texas does not have any gambling-we used to love going to the Cainso on Blackfoot trail and now go once in a while to Oklahoma but it takes about an hour each way.

I have never found anything at the Grapevine Mills Mall but you may want to go to the Allen Premium Ooutlt Mall in Allen Texas about 30 mnutes north iof where you will be (go north on 35E, take 635 East to 75N, exit at Stacy Road)

I agree - outlet in Allen is much better.

If you want to look at what shopping is like in Dallas you could go to NorthPark on Northwest Hwy (Loop 12) and Central Expway (Hiway 75). (Many of our major streets have 2 names, you will probably need to know both of them.)

NorthPark is said to be one of the most profitable malls in the United States and one of the oldest but it is continually updated. Neiman Marcus is there as well as BOSS and other high end stores. This mall probably represents a diversity of upper to middle stores and has good dining options. Across the street at Lincoln Park are more good stores.

    NorthPark is a Dallas landmark.

    Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

    another question!

We wanted to visit Billy Bob%26#39;s as well. I have checked their web site and see that they have concerts....are they usually in the main ';bar area'; or in a separate concert area? Just wondering if we should be buying concert tickets now to avoid missing out on the main attraction the evening we are there. I have no idea how the hall is arranged or how much time we should allow there. We had intended to spend a whole Saturday in Fort Worth.

    Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

Billy Bob%26#39;s is huge. The main concert area has seating for several thousand people. There are long rectangular tables that seat about 20 people each lined up in about six rows of 15 to 20 tables.

People who buy tickets to the concert have seating in the concert area and are served beer/drinks by wait staff. If the musicians are someone you care then you would want to buy tickets to the concert area. If you want tickets definitely buy them as soon as possible. Main line act tickets go pretty quickly and some of the seats do not have good views.

Here%26#39;s the link to the seating chart. www.billybobstexas.com/seating-chart.htm

The building is L-shaped with the rodeo area, pool tables, and shops on one arm of the L, and the main stage and houseband area on the other arm of the L with a restaurant tucked behind the houseband area.

There are several bar areas where you can either be waited on or go to the bar directly for drinks.

If you get to Billy Bob%26#39;s by 7 or 8 you will have plenty of time there. They are open late. I believe the shops are open until 1 AM and the bars close at 2 or so. I would not eat at Billy Bob%26#39;s but would take the opportunity to eat at a better food choice and just have drinks at Billy Bob%26#39;s.

Every night the house band plays both before and after the main stage band. The house bands vary, they%26#39;re not really house bands in the sense that they play every day, but in the sense that they play frequently and aren%26#39;t main stage bands. Dwight Yoakum, the Bellamy Brothers, Robert Earl Keen, Hank Williams, Jr., etc., are main stage type bands.

If you buy general admission tickets, you can still hear the music, but you don%26#39;t have a close view of the musicians. The main concert area is bordered on the back by the second stage area with a dance floor. You can have a distant (200 or so feet) straight line view of the stage if there aren%26#39;t a zillion other people in front of you.

Here%26#39;s a link to a good range of photos.

    billybobstexas.com/pictures/SaturdayNight/sa…

    Billy Bob's - Fort Worth

As always, ChrystinP is right on target. Billy Bob%26#39;s is a terrific venue- one of the best in the area. You will have a terrific musical experience and meet some great folks. Go by the White Elephant as well. Good bands there and lots of fun. Cattlemen%26#39;s is a classic Stockyards restaurant- good chicken fried steak- good steaks- old time, classic atmosphere.

Thanks so much for all of your help! Now I can hardly wait to get there. :)

    Restaurants near Grapevine Mills

We%26#39;ll be staying at the Springhill Marriott at Grapevine for a weekend and were wondering what good restaurants would be closeby or within walking distance? thanks!

    Restaurants near Grapevine Mills

There are several basic chain type restaurants within walking distance- you will be right by the Grapevine Mills Mall. Inside is a Rainforest Cafe (kids like it) and a Chili%26#39;s Too (small version of the regular Chili%26#39;s) plus all kinds of food court type places. Outside, in a strip by the mall are Steak N%26#39; Shake (great burgers, fries and shakes), Love and War (OK steaks), and several others- I think maybe a Bennigans. Also, there is an Embassy Suites across the street that has a couple of restaurants.

If you have a car, you should head to downtown Grapevine and checkout some local type places such as WIllhoites (not great food but live bands), South Prarie Oyster Bar, Back Porch, Weinberger%26#39;s Deli.

    Restaurants near Grapevine Mills

    Hello.

I%26#39;m pretty fimilar with that area and like to eat dinner after shopping all day.

As far as restaurants inside Grapevine Mills, I%26#39;d suggest not doing that.

The Chili%26#39;s too offers a small menu selection and Rainforest Cafe is neat to do once and that%26#39;s it.

The food is okay and the atmosphere is kid oriented and you could wait in line more than an hour.

The strip of restaurants has a decent selection.

TX Love and War is pretty good and they have entertainment on the weekends...call ahead to double check who will be there.

Cozymels has great Carribean style Mexican food, I love it!!

There%26#39;s also a good restaurant attatched to the Bass Pro Shops. It%26#39;s called Big Buck Brewery. I really like the food there, and they had a nice selection.

There is also a bar area upstairs if that is of interest to you.

If you will have a car, I suggest going to the Gaylord Texan. They have several restaurants inside ranging in price and selection.

A restaurant called Amur Lur (sp?) is rated one of the most romantic in the DFW area. I have not been there yet, but plan to soon.

The area is beautiful, you could even take a scenic drive down by the lake and if the weather outside is nice, have a picnic...it%26#39;s so relaxing there.

They also have hiking, biking trails.

    Hope this helps.

I do like the downtown area as the other post spoke of...mainly a walking stretch of small shops and restaurants. They also have the wineries in downtown, which is fun to do as well.

hope this helps!! Enjoy your stay.

    Thanks poodleone and andream.

I%26#39;m leaning towards the Love and War in Texas restaurant...that might be the best choice for some authentic Texas vittles! I%26#39;m assuming we would be within walking distance?

I%26#39;m a shopper and will have a couple of other shopahoics with me, is there anything in particular we should check out in downtown Grapevine?

thanks for all of your advice....I feel better knowing I have a ';plan'; before I go!

    Restaurant suggestions?

I would appreciate restaurant suggestions for a one-week visitor.

I remember reading about a famous hamburger place ?...

    Thanks for any help!

    Restaurant suggestions?

There is a website; www.restaurantheaven.com that has listings and reviews of independent locally owned restaurants in town. They also have a free lunch give away every week. It%26#39;s neat!

    Restaurant suggestions?

That%26#39;s great, Dove. Thank you so much!

Just ate over Christmas at a restaurant called ';Salt %26amp; Pepper'; - it was by far the best meal I have ever had in W. Falls, and I highly recommend it. The owners are Greek, so the menu starts from there, but they have outstanding steak and game specials as well. The one hamburger place you might be thinking of has closed since my last visit, unfortunately, but I%26#39;m sure there are still good burgers around. There is also a nice new Thai restaurant opened which wasn%26#39;t too bad. Both of these are in the area around Kemp %26amp; Midwestern, behind the mall.

  • Family trip to Seaworld, but I hate the water.

I%26#39;ll go to Seaworld one day, but on the second day my husband and kids are gonna want to go back and do the waterpark thing. I%26#39;m gonna want to do something else on my own. We%26#39;ll have a vehicle, but I%26#39;m leary about driving around in San Antonio. Thinking they can take the car and leave me at the hotel to wander around with my camera on foot. So, of course, my dilema is where should we stay? I%26#39;ve read so many reviews that I%26#39;ve seriously confused myself.

We%26#39;ll be there four nights in June, with a budget of $200 or less per night for a hotel. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Family trip to Seaworld, but I hate the water.

Well, this is just my opinion, but I think wandering around SeaWorld wtih a camera would be more interesting than wandering around a hotel with a camera. Just my opinion. I%26#39;m not much on waterparks myself, but there are things to do at SeaWorld that don%26#39;t involve water (the aviary, the clydesdales... the shows)

Or... I%26#39;d drop everyone off, keep the car, and head to North Star Mall. I realize that it%26#39;s still driving, but it%26#39;s not a complicated route and once you get there you%26#39;ll park the car.

A resort hotel (Hyatt Hill Country, La Cantera) would probably be a little out of your price range. However, if you can get a ';deal';, I%26#39;d recommend one of those... they are close to Sea World and have property on which to wander. Or, find a hotel that has a nice spa if you like that kind of thing. The unfortunate thing is that spas can break the bank pretty quickly. :-)

At any rate... have a great trip!

Family trip to Seaworld, but I hate the water.

Check out Amerisuites, the one on I-10. It isn%26#39;t too far to Sea World, and located pretty well to get to anything decent. Amerisuites is also a part of the Hyatt family, so if you sign up for Hyatt%26#39;s Gold club or whatever it%26#39;s called, you can earn free nights and points. I got a free night, so I%26#39;m a believer! There are also some decent restaurants w/in walking distance, I like County Line, which is a BBQ place. Also it%26#39;s very close to the Shops at La Cantera, which is a lovely outdoor mall. Also nearby is Fiesta Texas (thrill rides), a Westin resort w/ a nice view of San Antonio because it%26#39;s up on a hill, one of the few in Texas. This area I believe is called medical center-adjacent or something similar. It isn%26#39;t really near the RiverWalk, although nothing is very far from anywhere in this town, in my opinion. I would not recommend staying at a hotel on Hwy 281, that hwy is a nightmare because it doesn%26#39;t have a proper interchange, you have to exit the hwy. onto the street, and then turn on the streets to get onto the other hwy. Ridiculous! Of course, I am a newer resident here. If I knew about that situation, I might not be here today! HTH!

we are exploring our retirement options. the hill counrty looks beautiful and the homes seem to be within our reach. I was wondering if you could give me an idea about the different communities there. HSB, WHSB, spicewood and marble falls. how populated are these areas. is lake LBJ remote? other area we should look at. a golf community for sure, an area where you have the conviences of a few resturants, a movie or two. maybe a little window shop. can you give me an idea about your weather. do you get a lot of rain? very cold in the winter and I was hoping the summer didnt get as hot as palm springs!! would love to come for a look see and hoped you would give me an idea of where to start from %26amp; where we might stay. much mahalo and warmest aloha for your help

    aloha hill country experts

    Aloha hothulamaui!

No one has responded yet, so now that I%26#39;m over my shock that ANYONE would voluntarily leave Maui (LOL)... I%26#39;ll gve it a shot! I%26#39;m not your best expert though.

I love Marble Falls. I think you%26#39;ve really picked a good area to look at. The population of Marble Falls is about 5,000. Horseshoe Bay and Spicewood are smaller. Lake LBJ isn%26#39;t all that remote. It is fairly close to Austin, and is a popular place to have lake houses for Austinites, Dallasites, and Houstonians.

Check out www.marblefalls.org for more information. All of the areas you mentioned are spitting distance from Marble Falls. We have stayed in the Marriott resort in Marble Falls and really enjoyed it (it wasn%26#39;t too expensive).

Other areas to look at include Bastrop and Dripping Springs, even Canyon Lake if you want to be near water. There are beautiful golf course communities north of San Antonio (out Hwy 281) which give you the advantage of being close to a large metropolitan area (with International Airport and excellent medical facilities).

Um... weather. Texas weather varies like you wouldn%26#39;t believe. Some winters are mild, some are cold. I see on the Marble Falls website that the averages for January are 18 (low) and 77 (high). That surprises me somewhat. We live about 2 hours north of that and there%26#39;s no way our average low temperature in January is 18. Maybe the altitude makes it that cold? In the summer, the average temperatures (same website) in July is 68 (low) and 99 (high). Again, the ';low'; seems low to me.

I don%26#39;t know exactly where there%26#39;s a golf course community in the area, but there must be some because they are very popular in Texas. I know for sure that there%26#39;s one in Horseshoe Bay, but not being a golfer I couldn%26#39;t tell you if it was any good. At any rate, there are top notch courses in Austin which is an easy drive.

Okay... still recovering from shock - I%26#39;m not being very coherent! LOL.

The way I would do this, if I were you and had time for an exploratory trip, would be to come visit. Marble Falls is centrally located to all of the areas you mentioned. You could stay in Marble Falls and drive around during the day. The summertime is a lot busier there, because of the lake activities.

Anyway, not very helpful, but wanted to respond anyway. Our Hill Country Experts must be having a busy Thanksgiving! Aloha! And Welcome to Texas!

    aloha hill country experts

Aloha! I, too, am shocked that anyone would leave Maui! I am not an expert in the Hill Country but my mom is 68 and has been a Winter Texan for about 10 years. She absolutely loves New Braunfels AND she is a golfing nut! I don%26#39;t know where she golfs but do know that there are many interesting things in and around New Braunfels and also many retired (mostly Northerners) to keep one company.

As far as the weather goes, being from Minnesota we have a different perspective and consider Texas winters absolutely mild.

I%26#39;m not sure if you planned on living there year round...but if so New Braunfels looks like it is very nice in the summer time. It has a few rivers flowing through it where people have a great time tubing, and a gigantic waterpark called the Schlitterbahn where natives go to beat the Texas heat. There are many ';live oaks'; where are beautiful oaks which bend every which way instead of growing straight up. They provide plenty of shade and greenery and are simply lovely to look at. The landscape is not stark and full of cactus and tumbleweeds!!! It is quite pretty and the people are genuinely friendly.

Aloha! I just moved here 13 months ago and might have some good things for you to think about. I did not have any idea that San Antonio and Austin are horrific for allergies. I didn%26#39;t have allergies until I got here, and then I was horribly sick for the first five months w/ constant sinus infections. Now that I am settling in, I see that most people have allergy problems here. Ah, if I only knew!

My DH and I did live in HI for a few years, way back in %26#39;92-94%26#39;. I got bored. It was a little ';small'; for me. But I still love to visit. Also it is very weird to not have an ocean anywhere nearby. I am from So. Cal. and liked the idea that the ocean was not very far away, even if I didn%26#39;t go there very often.

I don%26#39;t see that you are looking at SA in particular, but last summer was my first here and it was HOT. From mid-April to late October, it was pretty miserable. I am not a fan of humidity (one thing I didn%26#39;t like about HI) and it is hot and humid. Palm Springs heat is a joy compared to the heat here! There is a fair amount of golf here, even though, like I said, it gets pretty hot here. Right now it is below freezing, which doesn%26#39;t happen a lot, but seems to happen 2-3 times in the winter. I have to say that I can handle a few days of cold better than I can handle hot %26amp; humid. In SA we are in a severe drought, our landscape watering is still restricted. They put the restrictions on in mid-summer. There are plenty of cute little Hill Country towns to sightsee in; Fredericksburg, Boerne, Gruene, to name a few. Also have good access to outlet malls.

If there is any other info you might have questions on, please feel free to ask.

    A hui hou!

Aloha Maui, we just moved to New Braunfels in May, originally from Wisconsin, with a stop off in New Mexico, so far we love it here. It was hot this summer, but didn%26#39;t seem as bad as people made it out to be, and the weather here in winter is usually pretty nice even if we are having what they are calling an artic blast tonight (it%26#39;s 32) and tomorrow (28 to 32) that is threatening to close schools etc because of the freezing rain. But this is not the norm. Housing is so affordable here, and the cost of living is relatively inexpensive. There is the allergy thing, and during the peak it did hit me pretty hard the closer I got to Austin. My wife%26#39;s brother and his wife are also considering eventual retirement in this area from Maui, and were looking over the area this fall. There are so many things to do, and places to see and eat, and prices are very reasonable. I would probably not live in San Antonio or Austin proper because of the traffic, and the closer you get to Austin, the higher the cost of living gets, but it is still very reasonable compared to other places. As our sister-in law says in Texas you get so big for so little, and in Maui you get so little for so big. Hill country is beautiful, but is getting very popular, and home and land prices are rising at a time other places are seeing declining home prices. This isn%26#39;t the place for everybody, but so far we really like it, and there seems to be a lot of people from all over the country moving here. In our subdivision, we have people from Mexico, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Minnesota, Virginia, Florida, Wyoming, Kentucky, Utah, and other states I can%26#39;t think of right now.

LOL about the allergies!! Check out www.pollen.com sometime; you%26#39;ll often see Waco in the ';Top Ten Worst'; for the whole country. Something about the topography, I guess.

I was fine in Houston. I was eh... ';okay'; in Austin. I was fine in San Antonio and Dallas. Then I moved to the Waco area and learned what allergies were all about. Unfortunately, allergy medicine makes me feel awful, so I won%26#39;t take anything.

So... for all of my tripadvisor friends... FWIW, my allergy-prone dear old dad%26#39;s salt water trick works. (gross... I can%26#39;t believe I%26#39;m admitting it!) Rinse out your nasal passages with salt water. (the pharmacy sells sterile saline sprays that you can use in the shower). Between that and changing the HEPA filters on my central a/h every three months, my allergies are pretty much gone despite spending a fair amount of time outdoors, a lot of it around a farm. And you have the added bonus of not being as likely to catch colds and viruses.

    Just my two cents. :-)

P.S. I%26#39;m not sure hothulamaui is still reading the thread.

    can you help Crystinp

You have been very helpful to other travelers i was wondering if you could help me.

I am looking to fly in from England to see my Saints play the Cowboys on the 10th of December. Iam looking for a hotel near some good sports bars and a little entertainment.

I was not looking to hire a car but i can if it will make things easier.

How far is the downton area from the airport?

how far is downtown from Texas stadium

how far is the stadium from the airport.

    Thanks in advance

    mark

    can you help Crystinp

Texas is definitely easier with a car, but not absolutely required. However, check out the rates at Thrifty.com as I rent cars from them all the time (Stratus is the mid-sized car and it handles well and gets good gas mileage) and they%26#39;re extremely reasonable. You might not wish to do so with the switch from driving on the left to driving on the right.

We don%26#39;t have a really, really great public transit system, though, so you might have to use cabs more so than the public system.

Be aware the Trinity River Express is fine for getting from the airport to downtown and back again, as long as you don%26#39;t want to use it on Sunday, which I don%26#39;t believe you will.

Downtown is approximately 25 minutes driivng from the airport, and the stadium is midway between the airport and downtown.

Regarding sports bars, check out this site: …citysearch.com/bestof/winners/sports_bar

The first six are in the downtown, Uptown, Knox-Henderson areas, and one that isn%26#39;t mentioned because it%26#39;s not strictly just a sports bar is the Metro Grill, also in the Knox Henderson area.

If you want to be around nightlife and sports bars, then I%26#39;d recommend staying in the downtown area rather than out by the stadium. You had mentioned a SpringHills Suites on another thread, and that%26#39;s a reliable mid-price chain that%26#39;s part of the Marriott family. A similar equivalent to that in the downtown area would be the Bradford Suites (close to the American Airlines Center on the north-western edge of the downtown area), there%26#39;s a Days Inn, a Hampton Inn, and an Amerisuites all downtown.

If you wanted to go a little more upscale you might be able to get a good web rate at the Magnolia, which is in the center of downtown, close to the Adolphus and Neiman Marcus. There are scads of food options if you%26#39;re downtown. Not that there aren%26#39;t in the stadium area, but most of the options out that way will be chains.

Also, if you%26#39;re downtown you can easily get to a couple of the major sites such as the 6th Street Museum and the Kennedy Memorial. I%26#39;m assuming since you%26#39;re coming all this way, you%26#39;d like to see a little of the city.

Are you coming by yourself? How many days are you going to be here and specifically what days do you arrive and depart.

    can you help Crystinp

    Crystin

You are wealth of information all of it fantastic. I am not bothered about the driving as i have been to the states several times befor.

What i am looking at is to arrive about miday on Thursday the 7th of December and leave on Monday the 11th.

Now obviously i am a sports nut so if the Mavericks are in town i would go and see them.

I do try to pack in as much as i can on my little aventures (last year went to st louis to see the Saints play the Rams and managed to catch a ice hockey game tour the budwieser factory as well as going up to the top of the arch.)

I will be traveling alone as my wife hates football and to be honest i think she looks forward to getting rid of me for a couple of days.

    Thanks again in advance again

OK, I%26#39;m going to post a series of responses so it won%26#39;t be one huge response.

I just located the SpringHill Suites you mentioned and it is in an iffy area, but would be okay if you rent a car. Definitely not okay without a car. Also, note that the Stemmons location would make someone from Dallas think this is right off the freeway. On my way home from the airport last night, I kept a close eye out for it (I knew I%26#39;d never noticed one before) and didn%26#39;t see it. The location is actually on Stemmons TRAIL and it appears to be a block or so from Stemmons.

The benefits of that location is that it is close to the stadium, probably has a decent rate for the room, and with a car is in reasonable proximity to everything you%26#39;ll be interested in. It is a Marriott property and Marriott does not tend to have sloppy properties, so it%26#39;s probably a nice room.

Tonight when I was checking something out at Poor David%26#39;s Pub, I found they have a deal with the Lawrence Hotel for $60 a night. This is a pretty good deal! I’ll call the general manager tomorrow and see if that rate would be good the entire time of your stay. Note that they do have suites available, but the rate is $139 a night, which might be more than you want to spend.

The Lawrence is a boutique hotel directly across from Union Station. It is within two blocks of the Kennedy assassination area, the 6th Floor Museum and the Kennedy Memorial. Another couple of blocks gets you to the West End. The train will take you directly to the AA Center for a Mavericks game. This would be a great location without a car. They have a shuttle van that runs from 6AM to 10PM and will take you anywhere within three miles of the hotel. Tomorrow I’m also going to ask the GM if they would make arrangements for a Cowboys game to transport guests to and from the game.

    Itinerary to consider:

You get in midday on Thursday. Grab your bags and go to the lower level of the terminal (you’re probably coming into D terminal and the whole things is lower level). Look for a bus that goes to the remote south lot. Buses run every 13 – 14 minutes or so. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the remote south lot. Once at the remote south lot, ask the driver where you get the bus for the TRE and they’ll point the stop out to you. That bus runs every 15 minutes or so and takes another 12 minutes to get to Centerport. You will pass the administrative offices of American Airlines and it’s a pretty interesting drive for a newcomer. If you catch the 12:43 train to Union Station you’ll arrive a few minutes after 1PM. If you don’t get the 12:43 train, the next train is at 2:07 (the mid-day trains run less frequently).

Thursday afternoon after you check into your hotel first stop is the Old Red Courthouse and the Visitor’s Center. You go out the front door of the Lawrence, turn left and walk 20 feet, then walk to the right on Houston St. This is one block south of the hotel and en route to the Kennedy stuff and directly across the street from Dealey Plaza. Check out the brochures and see if there’s something there that interests you that you want to include in your weekend.

Then do the Kennedy assassination area, the 6th Floor Museum (allow two hours and well worth the visit--I think it%26#39;s one of the best museums I%26#39;ve ever been to), and the Kennedy memorial. You could have an early dinner somewhere in the West End, I’d recommend Newport’s if you like seafood, or Spiatza’s for Italian/pizza (divine pizza).

Thursday night Mavs VS. Detroit (single ticket sales begin on September 30, get it the day they go on sale). nba.com/mavericks/tickets/tickets_index.html

Friday: Go to Pioneer Plaza when you get up. Our City Hall is right next door, I.M. Pei designed it, scenes from Robocop were filmed here because it was the most futuristic building in America.

After seeing the Plaza, walk over to Neiman Marcus. I know shopping isn’t a guy thing but Neiman’s is a premier destination and well worth a walk through. The Zodiac Room is great for lunch, but if it’s too much food/money for lunch, their sandwich shop on street level is excellent, too.

If it’s a pretty day walk over to the Nasher sculpture garden and walk through the outdoor museum. The front desk will also have a copy of a guide to Dallas’s city sculptures. There are about 35 pieces scattered around downtown and it would be a nice walk to see some of them. While you’re walking scope out the tunnels …taitlifto.net/DallasTunnelsLinks.html

If that doesn’t interest you then consider Fair Park. Fair Park has the largest collection of art deco exhibition buildings in the world. For $21 you can get a FairPass that allows you into all the museums at the Park. It’s a beautiful park and fun just to walk around without ever going into a museum. However, the Hall of State only asks for a voluntary contribution and has a nice display of Texas History. www.fairpark.org

Friday night: Pocket Sandwich Theater to watch the incomparable David Lambert as Scrooge in “Ebenezer Scrooge.” This will be the 25th year they’ve done this play, and David’s been Scrooge for about the last 12 years (as I remember). I’ve seen this play several times each year since 1991. I just love this theater’s production. pocketsandwich.com/press/dmn_Scrooge2003.html You can make reservations at the Pocket now, and I would because their shows of Ebenezer sell-out every year.

Saturday AM: Catch the TRE and head over to Fort Worth. Downtown Fort Worth is gorgeous during Christmas. Lots to walk around, see, and do. The Sid Richardson Museum of Western Art should be open. This is a very small gallery with lots of Remington%26#39;s and Russell%26#39;s. Stop in the Western store on the corner of Main street and Sundance Square. There%26#39;s not much in there that I can afford, but it%26#39;s the most exquisite stuff and fun to look at. Guys really like the boots and belts. Go to Cabo Grande for lunch and have the ribs for an appetizer at least, if not the full order. Yum.

Head back to Dallas early and catch at least the early part of Candlelight at Old City Park. You will know you%26#39;re in Texas at this event. This park museum hosts 40+ buildings from the pioneer period of Texas history (1840 - 1910). There will be singing and music in the church and old schoolhouse about every hour on the hour. www.oldcitypark.org/Event_Detail.aspx?EID=3

Saturday night, head on over to Poor David%26#39;s Pub. The music is sure to be good.

Sunday: Have a leisurely breakfast, then head to the stadium.

After the game hit the sports bars.

Check out the Lawrence at www.hotellawrencedallas.com/guestrooms.html. Ruthie tells me the photos are of a standard guest room. I am going to try to get over there tomorrow and do a tour of the hotel. I%26#39;ve always wanted to see the rooms, but have only been in the lobby.

Yea! ChrystinP! Going above and beyond the call of duty. Could this be made a sticky for all these football watching folks coming to town this fall?

Ditto! ';Yea! ChrystinP! Going above and beyond the call of duty.'; Or just start an Inside page and copy and paste the info.

We are coming down for the NHL All-star game and I know there are alot of activities planned around the event and we will be attending most of them but my two boys aged 4 and 6 are looking for some mini golf action. We try to find one mini golf course in the places we travel to - seems to be the hi-lite of their trip ( I know it sounds strange but it%26#39;s the one activity they ask for on every trip) We are staying down town but will have a car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck, and have a great time!

There%26#39;s a Celebration Station in Mesquite at the junction of I-30 and I-635 that%26#39;s a lot of fun for younger kids. Older kids enjoy it, too, but it%26#39;s geared for younger ones especially. My kids always loved it. Last time my BIL%26#39;s family visited us, we all went to play mini-golf and the youngest one with us was 16.

I think it%26#39;s great that you do something like play mini-golf on each family trip. It makes it memorable and gives the kids something familiar to look forward to (young kids needs that familiarity of a family experience). When my boys was younger the baby (now 6%26#39;4'; 280 lbs) always wanted to go on any public transportation. It turned out to be great fun. We even went on a water taxi in Isla Mujer strictly to meet that family standard. To this day, we always evaluate what public transportation options are available and go on whatever%26#39;s around for the local experience.

  • Grapevine to Fort Worth Cab

Does anyone have a ballpark figure of what cab fare from Grapevine to Fort Worth would be? After seeing what%26#39;s at the Stockyards for evening entertainment, I%26#39;m thinking we should grab a cab!!

    Grapevine to Fort Worth Cab

Here%26#39;s a page with approximate fares from DFW Airport to various locations. I am going to guesstimate $75-80 (?) for your hotel to the Stockyards.

    www.dfwairport.com/transport/taxis.html

    Grapevine to Fort Worth Cab

If a cab is too costly both ways, maybe you could get the hotel to take you to the airport and then take the airport bus to the train station and take the train over to FTW. On one of the recent threads I posted all the info on getting from the airport to the TRE.

Only problem with trying to use the TRE for late night transportation is the schedule. Since it is mainly designed as a commuter rail, it quits running around 1030PM.

Also remember TRE does not run on Sundays. As an international destination we need train service every day. Who can we contact to fix this scheduling error?

I wasn%26#39;t suggesting the TRE on the return portion, just the outbound portion.

When the state Democratic convention was held in Fort Worth this past year, they ran a late train for attendees (late being 11:00PM) , but that%26#39;s the only time I%26#39;ve known them to do that.

I don%26#39;t know what the rationale is for no TRE on Sundays. It may be as simple as having to pay double-time to the operators. Or possibly it wasn%26#39;t getting enough traffic to warrant running it. The only thing I can suggest is calling/writing the transit authority.

Because these folks are going on Saturday (why do I think that), they should be able to get to Fort Worth via the TRE easily and at least save a chunk of change. Plus the train is fun and allows you to see the beautiful Texas landscape.

I am sure tanfanattic appreciates the clarifications. Since the TRE is a commuter line, it is easy for visitors to mistake it for a regular mass transit option. It is alot of fun to take it, espcially with kids who don%26#39;t get to ride trains very often.

Good Chinese Restaurants and other Asian restaurants?

I%26#39;m planning to go back to Houston end of January primarily to eat at restaurants. What are the best chinese restaurants? and Thai restaurants and Korean restaurants? I have a 6yrs old and a 4 yrs old kids. Nothing too pricey nor romantic nor fancy, something for family. Thanks!

Good Chinese Restaurants and other Asian restaurants?

Are you interested in authentic Chinese/Thai food or the somewhat Americanized version? Also, what part of town will you be in?

The Bellaire area (';The New Chinatwon';) has tons of good chinese restaurants, what you%26#39;ll see is that most of the clientele is Asian. ';Little Korea'; area is around Long Point and Gessner where you%26#39;ll find Korean restaurants and grocery stores. Will you have a car to get around, as the city is quite spreadout.

Chinese: Fung%26#39;s Kitchen on highway 59 south and Bellaire is good. As is Golden Palace on Bellaire, their dimsum on the weekends is great. Or go further West to the HongKong mall (Bellaire and Boone), there is a big restaurant on the corner of the complex called Ocean something-or-another which has good dim sum on the weekends.

Thai, the standard (somewhat Americanzied) destination is Nit Noy in the Rice Village or across from Second Baptist on Woodway and Voss. There is a simple, low-key Thai restaurant called Nidda%26#39;s on lower Westheimer and Waugh (1 block west of Montrosse Blvd) whose food in my opinion is superior to Nit Noy%26#39;s, but it%26#39;s not a fancy place and therefore not a ';destination'; to most people except the locals.

Korean: Seoul Garden on Long Point is a popular one. There is also a new Korean restaurant on the southeast corner of Bellaire and Corporate Dr., but for the life of me I can%26#39;t remember the name right now....

Good Chinese Restaurants and other Asian restaurants?

well, i envy u if u r in town just to eat coz u wont lack choices !

As for Asian, for authentic ones, I highly recommend Peking Cuisine on Gessner and 59 (southwest freeway). If u love peking duck, this is the real thing ! But u got to call ahead (morning) to reserve one for dinner. If u like ma po tofu, u r in luck here coz they make a good one but my favorite dish as well as the rest of my family is the gan bian si ji dou (green beans with ground meat) is definitely like the ones in China ! The best in town !!!

If u want a really good all asian (family style dishes as well as porridge, noodle soups from all over asia - vietnamese, hong kong, cantonese, etc) restaurant, Tan Tan on Bellaire is amazing (closer to beltway 8 side of town). They have the most extensive menu and great place for families (they had just taken over their neighbor%26#39;s lease when I left town to make it a bigger place due to the popularity, it is good and cheap).

Authentic Thai cant be more authentic than this family friendly (there is a very small arcade and a fish tank for kids to keep them entertained) place also along bellaire but not as far as Tan Tan (towards beltway 8). This place is called Thai Fast Food (i know the name doesnt sound great but believe me, it is GOOD !) and u will be a minority as most of the customers are other Asians esp. Thai workers in Houston. It is a restaurant but also offers cateria style option. Cheap and wonderful, they dont change the taste of the food to attract americans so beware of some food when they say it is spicy, they mean it !

Korean ? My favorite (used to visit at least once every other week coz their Soon Du Bu is awesome !) is Sam Bo Jung (de moss drive off bellaire). Seoul Garden is not as authentic as this one and this one is also not as pricey (seould got popular and serving sushi too so their prices had gone up but not their standard and quality !).

Houston has a HUGE vietnamese population so I do suggest u try some Vietnamese restaurants too. Along Bellaire u got a lot of choices and most of them are good.

If u like an authentic dim sum (like the ones in HK), drive to the Kim Son in Sugarland. There is another in downtown but not as good. The one in Sugarland (residential neighborhood now dominated by Asians) is really good and if u go, make sure u go early or the line will be long (really like HK !)

    Good Luck

PS. There are a lot of good Asian restaurants in town so if u want more, try one noodle shop called Hong Kong Cafe (also along Bellaire) or the Taiwanese shop (forgot the name) for great beef noodles. There is also a great dumpling house which serves good beef noodles, there are quite a few shops that serve bubble tea and other smoothies that ur kids might enjoy after dinner.

Another one is near the Galleria i had totally forgotten, it is also a great place for good cheap authentic Chinese food and the name is not fancy but who cares ? the food is good. It is simply known as Chinese Cafe (there are other branches in Bellaire).

    Good Luck and enjoy !

oh, my favorite vegetarian dumplings is at Dumpling King on Westheimer. But they do server other dumplings that are also very good but i absolutely love the vegetarian ones. They also have other dishes in their menu for family style lunches or dinners like other chinese restaurants. They have lunch specials too. Busy for lunch as there are a few offices around that area.

    Good Luck

Sinh Sinh also known as China Fast Food is a great place. It has been around over 15 years that I can remember. Seoul Garden too is nice for food but sad to say but the service at both is pretty lacking. Not a big deal for Sinh Sinh but at Seoul Garden sometimes you have to hunt down your waitress or you get the feeling like they are bothered by your asking for things. Tan Tan gets alot of fuss from some people and it has some good items but I am still a Sinh Sinh fan and they are open really late. Thai I don%26#39;t eat much but if you like Vietnamese try out Van Loc downtown great food cheap prices. HOpe it helps.

    -T

Is Kanowam Kwo still around on Telephone Road. Great Thai - have to get there early to avoid the crowds. Looks like nothing from outside but great food inside. Last time I ate there I heard he was moving to a different locale but haven%26#39;t checked into it since.

    Map of Trails

Hi there! We will be staying in this area for a week, the end of January. I have been told that there are lots of trails in the area. I am interested in doing some ';exploring'; on foot in the Woodlands area, but I am concerned about getting lost. Is there anywhere that a person can download a map of the trails in the area? I have done a search, but haven%26#39;t been able to turn anything up.

    Convention Center Hotel

I%26#39;ll be in San Antonio this spring for a meeting at the Henry Gonzalez Convention Center. The Marriott is the host hotel, but I won%26#39;t shell out $399 a night. I%26#39;d like to be within a few blocks, the closer the better if possible. I%26#39;ve never been there, so looking for advice.

    Convention Center Hotel

Wow, that sounds high! Have you tried Hotwire? Just to check, I tried 3/23, four-star, downtown, $169.

    Convention Center Hotel

    Octoboy,

Unfortunately I%26#39;m going Memorial Day Weekend.

I%26#39;m sticking to Hotwire - 4 star, downtown/Riverwalk, May 25 - May 28 $96 a night. No guarentee on location, but I%26#39;d guess no more than 10 blocks and could be much closer.

You might look at the Bed and Breakfasts. I was in San Antonio last weekend and there are several B%26amp;B close to the Marriott. We saw the Marriott close to downtown and stayed at a B%26amp;B within 2 blocks of it. There is also the Amersuites and the Holiday Inn Express close to the Marriott. The Amerisuites looked real good and included breakfast. Go to MapQuest.com to get an idea of the area. Have you tried mapquest before?

Some of the luxurious B%26amp;B are close to or over $200 and the hotel tax is 16.75%. Some of the less luxurious B%26amp;B are less than $200. But the hotel tax adds a significant amount to any stay in San Antonio.

I%26#39;ve not used hotwire before. The problem is I need to be close to the conv. ctr. because we%26#39;ll be exhibiting and will need to get stuff back and forth for 3 days.

If I book with hotwire and don%26#39;t like the location, can I cancel?

Nope - you buy it before you know the exact hotel.

Use Google to find out about hotels and Bed and Breakfasts in the area.

I always use advanced search in Google. You can put '; 78205 '; '; hotel '; on the first line and then press the search button.

Then do another search with '; 78205 '; on first line, '; Bed and Breakfast '; on second line.

Then choose one of the items that would give a google map. Then put the word hotel in the search line. That will show a really good map and a listing of 20 or more places to stay. You will find where the Marriott is in relationship to the convention center and other lodging.

78205 is the zip code for the convention center.

I just noticed a much easier method. Just choose map at the top of this page. You will find out similar information. Hotels and Bed and Breakfasts are choices on different tabs when the map comes up.

Woodlands or Galleria area for shopping and exercise?

I will be in Houston for a week the last week in January. My husband will be there on business. He will have a car and I will not. I have only been to Houston one other time, and we stayed at the Westin Oakes (Galleria), which was very nice. I shopped at the Galleria and exercised at the University right beside the hotel.

My husband has been to Houston many times more, and this time he is suggesting that we stay at a hotel near the Woodlands area. He thinks I will like the shopping at a little village near there. After browsing this site, I assume he means Old Town Spring. However, I have also found on here something called Rice Village. Which of the two areas are the nicest for unique shopping?

Is Rice Village close enough to walk to from the Galleria? Is it safe?

Is Old Town Spring within walking distance of The Woodlands area? Is it safe?

Also, if we were to stay in the Woodlands area, where could I go to exercise? I would like a nice place with lots of equipment, not just a tiny fitness center at the hotel. The University Club (if I remember the name correctly) was a great place to exercise.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Woodlands or Galleria area for shopping and exercise?

No, he means The Woodlands Town Center. It%26#39;s new in the past 5 years. There%26#39;s also a ginormous mall and two movie theaters.

The Woodlands would actually be excellent for exercise and walking. There are miles of paved trails that will take you from one side of the town to the other. It%26#39;s also a very safe area. Stay around the Town Center and you are fairly close to Lake Woodlands as well, which is actually quite nice (you can even kayak or canoe it).

Old Town Spring is definitely not walking distance from The Woodlands though. It%26#39;s mostly antique shops whereas Town Center is more traditional, somewhat upscale shopping.

Maybe someone else knows something, but there%26#39;s not much around the Town Center for gyms aside from the commercial ones. The YMCA and Woodlands Athletic Center both have excellent facilities, but they%26#39;re both pretty far from there.

    hth

Woodlands or Galleria area for shopping and exercise?

The Woodlands actually has 2 YMCA%26#39;s, about 2 miles from the Wooldlands Mall area. What hotel would you be staying at? You might check their website for gym access outside of the hotel if they don%26#39;t offer it, otherwise there are lots of trails in and around the Woodlands.

As stated above, besides the Woodlands Mall and the strip shopping centers around it, there is the newer Town Center shopping area which is really nice. It is very pedestrian friendly. Get more info at www.town-center.com.

Old Town Spring sadly is over-rated. It has some unique shops, a few restaurants, art galleries and the like. You can get more information at www.oldtownspringtx.com. You need a car to get here, but it not far off of I-45, about 10 miles south of The Woodlands.

Rice Village is very nice. It is not walkable from the Galleria. There are some nice shops on the other side of Loop 610 from the Galleria, on Westheimer. If you are in great walking shape you could probably walk there, but I would recommend maybe a hotel shuttle to drop off/pick up or taxi. I can%26#39;t think of the name of this place, though I want to say Highland Village.

Hope this helps, and welcome back to Houston.

Definitely The Galleria! I believe that both the Omni and The Houstonian have shuttles to the Galleria. The shuttle would be be no more than a five minute ride. The Houstonian has one of the most expensive private exercise clubs in Houston included in its facilities. You can use the facilities if you are a guest of the hotel. It would definitely be my choice if I had to choose. Although it is very close to the Galleria and all of the offices around there, it is built in the woods so that you forget you are in the city. Go to Houstonian.com to learn more. If you must be able to walk to The Galleria, then the Hilton on Post Oak is a very nice hotel. They have a great Sunday brunch. Also, while The Woodlands shopping area is certainly nice, it still is not near as large as The Galleria.

There is a new really nice 24Hour Fitness up in the Woodlands right by the mall and also a great Bikram yoga place by the mall above Pottery Barn.

The 24hour has lots of classes you can attend. I%26#39;m not sure how you would get a guest pass for a week but I%26#39;m sure you can find out online at 24hourfitness.com.

I dont know much about the woodlands area in the 5 years I had lived in Houston but the few times I went out there, it seems to go on forever with houses, strip malls etc. But they do have more trees too ! Definitely nicer or prettier than Houston main stretch for businesses. Woodlands is quite built up in the past few years and u will find it has everything u need but they are all HUGE (malls especially) facilities. I dont think safety is an issue (see a lot of families with kids and many kids services available).

As for Rice Village, it is a small little area (u can walk around and enjoy the shops and restaurants or bars) and is close to Galleria but not walking distance esp. in that heat and humidity.

    Good Luck

PS. U r right about about the gym in the galleria, it is called University Club. There is also a 24 hours fitness on Richmond (in a strip that house a good indian, middle eastern and chinese restaurant), across from best buy or is it circuit city ?

Houstonian is a great club (with 2 different gym due to different memberships, one is more exclusive that the Bush family are members of but u never see them using it so no worries there lol ! anyways, it is a very family oriented club so unless u want to enjoy the facilites with kids around esp. the cafe area, u will be better off at the Galleria coz the University Gym caters mainly to business people. The ladies changing rooms - again there are 2 of them, the one upstairs are for the gold members who have direct access to the gym, but the dressing rooms are big and well stocked with drinks and a nice sitting lounge with TV, phones and comfy sofas though u will find a lot of ladies hanging out here chatting. U have to sign in at the concierge every time u go to the gym to get a wrist band that has an electronic key to get to the club facilities via an in and an out door, sometimes there is a line due to members as well as hotel or spa guests) but I dont think u want to go there for a whole week though the hotel does provide a nice retreat from the rest of the city. I guess it depends on what u r looking for, it is a very nice club and hotel.

    Do I need a car

Heading to San Antonio in March, staying near Riverwalk, should I rent a car, would like to head to Missions as well as catch a Spurs game, am I able to do that with public transportation or shuttle options?

    HELP?????

    Thanks

    JPP

    Do I need a car

To visit any mission besides the Alamo you%26#39;ll need transportation. There are bus tours that allow you to ';hop off'; and rejoin a later tour. Getting to the Spurs game should be easy too. So you probably don%26#39;t.

That said, I always like having a car. Pros: Freedom to come and go (public transportation usually stops or is greatly reduced around 10 or 11 pm.) Cheap, usually around 20 bucks a day (transportation to and from the airport is usually more than that.) Allows you to get to less touristy spots. Cons: Parking at a downtown hotel is usually expensive, and driving in an unfamiliar city can be stressful.

    Do I need a car

Here is a wild option for you that few people know about. Near downtown, about the corner of Alamo and Durango streets is a small market called the Delivery Market. Depending on where you%26#39;re staying downtown, it%26#39;s probably within walking distance. They rent little Honda scooters. All they require is a valid drivers license, and they are $15 an hour or $40 for the entire day. The wife and I live in the neighborhood (King William Historic District) and gave it a try. It was an absolute blast and we%26#39;re in our late 40%26#39;s. San Antonio has done a great job of establishing a mission %26#39;trail'; that takes you on a loop of all the missions. The top out at about 35mph. We packed a lunch and had a great time. They only have about 4 or 5 single scooters and looks like a couple of larger Vespas%26#39; if you want to ride together with someone, so I%26#39;d call ahead to reserve.

As far as the Spurs game goes, use the trolley system or the Via Bus.

    Distance from riverwalk to airport

    Hi

How far is it from the Alamo car hire place at San Antonio Intl Airport, 10115, Mc Allister Freeway to the Drury Inn and Suites Riverwalk, 201 North St. Mary%26#39;s Street?

Also, how much would the taxi ride be from the airport to the Drury Inn.

Finally, things to see whilst travelling from San Antonio to Austin.

    Regards

    Steve LL

    Distance from riverwalk to airport

Taxi is about $20 (maybe a little more with fuel charges.)

    According to MapQuest:

Total Est. Time: 15 minutes Total Est. Distance: 9.58 miles

    Distance from riverwalk to airport

    Many thanks!!!!!!!!!!

You%26#39;re looking at $20-$25 for a cab. It%26#39;s a straight shot on US281/I37 so it goes quick unless you catch 5:00 traffic.

    Dining and hangouts

Hey locals, another question, I have been to SPI once before, I loved the ShimpHaus,Louies backyard and Bigos, what else do you suggest for decent priced meals in the area, is Port Isabel worth checking out? I am headed back out in early Febuary.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Dining and hangouts

Re Mexico, you can bring back prescription drugs without prescriptions, for your own use, up to 30 days supply. Tranquilizers require a prescrition from a Mexican Dr. Beer and liquor can be purchased at the Duty free shops on both sides of the border or in the Mexican shops. A $1.25 tax is applied to each bottle of liquor-don%26#39;t know about beer. Cuban cigars-not-you are still coming back into the States!

  • Suggestions/opinions on car rental vs. taxi to Ft. Worth

We will be arriving at the Dallas/Fort Worth airport around 10pm on a Wednesday evening and need transportation to Fort Worth. I know it is a long drive so we were thinking that renting a car would be a better idea that taking a taxi. We will be staying with friends and could use their cars when we get to their house, but really don%26#39;t want to make them drive all the way to and from the airport for us. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Should we rent a car and who should we rent from? Does anyone know what a taxi fare would be? Thank you.

    emjay

Suggestions/opinions on car rental vs. taxi to Ft. Worth

Here%26#39;s a link to help estimate taxi fares and a list of taxi companies. One of them should be able to help determine the fare depending on where you want to go in the city.

    http://www.town-mall.net/travel/Taxis.html

We did use Super Shuttle before but having to wait as they dropped off each person before us was quite time consuming and annoying,

Suggestions/opinions on car rental vs. taxi to Ft. Worth

A taxi is probably going to be pretty expensive. I would recommend either renting a car (you would probably spend far less by renting your car through priceline--I%26#39;ve used priceline many times for cars and have been very pleased) or using a shuttle service. Call 1-800-BLUE-VAN or visit www.supershuttle.com for information. I imagine a cab fair will be outrageously expensive, but I could be wrong. Good luck!

  • Dallas, Tx staying at the Adams Mark

My husband and I will be in Dallas, mid February. HIs conference is located near the Adams Mark. Where are great places to eat or things to do in this area. We will have a car there.

Dallas, Tx staying at the Adams Mark

Stephen Pyles is great.....it%26#39;s just around the corner from where you will be staying.

Dallas, Tx staying at the Adams Mark

One great thing about the Adam%26#39;s Mark is it is right across the street from the Pearl St. DART station. You can check out the Mockingbird Station area; Cityplace with its M-line Streetcar connections to Uptown and the West Village, and the North Park Mall . We have enjoyed Dakotas and the Iron Cactus downtown. Depending on the weather (February can be warm or brisk!) you may enjoy being outside a bit.

Places to stay things to do near UT

My daughter has an audition at UT on Saturday January 26. we are flying in on Friday at around 6PM and leaving Sunday morning.

    We%26#39;ve never been to Texas.

I%26#39;m looking for advice on places to stay near the university, places to eat and things to do in Austin for this short visit. I%26#39;m not looking to spend a lot but want someplace nice, safe %26amp; near things to see/do :-)!

    Thanks

    Marty

Places to stay things to do near UT

Visit the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. This is very interesting.

Places to stay things to do near UT

There are a few hotels just east of IH35 that are very convenient to UT. They%26#39;re major chains, though I can%26#39;t remember their names right now. Downtown is just south of campus, so you could stay at any hotel there and either drive or take a cab to campus. If you drive, you can park in the LBJ Library parking lot on Red River, north of Martin Luther King Blvd (MLK), and the library has some interesting artifacts, so you might enjoy a visit. I%26#39;m assuming the audition is music, and the LBJ Library is close to the music building (relatively speaking--this is Texas). UT also has some museums (Texas history and art). Check out their Web site to see what%26#39;s going on as far as exhibits.

Restaurants and things to do depend on what you like to do and eat. There are plenty of restaurants in the area. Just give us a heads up as to what you like.

If you%26#39;re into performing arts, check out UT%26#39;s site to see what shows, dances, concerts are on for that weekend. Also, spend some time on the UT campus. Check out the South and West Mall areas, and take a tour of the UT Tower, if it%26#39;s open. The campus has some great landscape and architecture.

If the weather is nice, and you have a car, you could head out to Zilker Park and walk the hike and bike trail along the lake. It%26#39;s nice on the weekends, especially on Saturday mornings if the rowers are out. The Botanical Gardens are also on Barton Springs Rd. across from the Zilker Park entrance. If you like Zen-style gardens, this is a nice place to spend some quiet time.

If you like shopping, check out SoCo (Congress south of Riverside) for some eclectic shops reminiscent of old Austin. We also have a few malls and some interesting stores at 6th and Lamar (where the Whole Foods mothership and Book People are). You can also walk ';The Drag,'; the street just west of UT campus that is home to some bookstores, clothing stores, and eateries. If your daughter is going to UT, she%26#39;ll become very familiar with that area.

If you have any special interests, let us know. I%26#39;m sure others have suggestions. Have fun!

It is probably too late now, but there are several nice B%26amp;Bs and a boutique hotel in West Campus.

I%26#39;m writing to you from the ';DoubleTree Club Hotel Austin Unversity Area';, where I%26#39;m staying for my first visit to Austin. I got it for $90/night (wth free high speed internet in-room) and it%26#39;s just at the SE tip of the UT campus. It%26#39;s a short (albeit unglamourous) walk to the football stadium and performing arts center. Clean and quiet hotel so far-- perfect for a quick in-and-out visit. You%26#39;ll probably cab it if you%26#39;re planning to head downtown (about $8 to downtown), so I guess factor that in when comparing rates.

As this really isn%26#39;t a vacation I%26#39;m not looking to spend a lot. I%26#39;ve narrowed down the choices to the Super 8 Central in downtown or one of the La Quinta Inns (either Ben White or Oltorf)

I%26#39;m concerned about noise at the Super 8

    Any thoughts on these choices?

    Thanks

    Marty

You will be nowhere near the University at Ben White or Oltorf. I agree that the Double Tree Club is a good option. There are also the Marriott at the Capitol, or the La Quinta right by the Capitol, on San Jacinto and 11th or 12th Street, I think. These are all much better alternatives for you than Oltorf or Ben White. You are near UT, near downtown, near the Capitol. Lots to do in walking distance, and you will get the true feel of the city. At the other locations you will be driving all over the town, and they are certainly not the nicest parts of Austin.

Try Austin%26#39;s Inn at Pearl Street, walking distance from UT campus. Nice boutique hotel. Including breakfast we stayed there for about $135/Nt. I think. Pleanty of off street parking and complimentary coffee. Nice place!Check them out. Good luck.

I looked at these options and they were neither not available for the 2 nights with 2 beds or were at least $50 more per night.

As my daughter will be auditioning at other locations I%26#39;m trying to be somewhat frugal. If it was more of a vacation I would be willing to spend the $ to be closer to downtown.

Of my 2 choices (Super 8 Central %26amp; LaQuinta Ben White) how safe %26amp; user friendly are they?

I%26#39;ll have a car so driving is not a major problem.

    Thanks

    Marty

I%26#39;m not sure where the Super8 is located. The one on Ben White is probably OK safetywise. You%26#39;ll need to use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. The neighborhood has some crime but it%26#39;s not awful. My bet is you won%26#39;t see any crime there, and you%26#39;re right down IH35 from UT. In rush hour, you%26#39;d want to leave maybe 45 minutes to an hour ahead of time to make sure you park and get to your building on time.

    The Super 8 - Austin (Downtown/University) is located at 5526 N Interstate Highway 35.

    Great place for a ';Texas';steak

We will be staying in the Riverwalk Area next month and want to eat at good steakhouse, really don%26#39;t want a chain or high end. We will be eating plenty of Tex Mex food too!

    Great place for a ';Texas';steak

perhaps Texas Land and Cattle steakhouse will fit the bill.....it%26#39;s a good safe bet on the riverwalk, and it will generally be a little less expensive than Morton%26#39;s or Little Rein....all on the riverwalk.

How are the driving conditions right now?

My husband is convinced we need to heat to San Antonio this weekend from San Angelo. How are the roads doing with the recent ice storm? Any major delays on 1-10 I should expect (and yes, I think my husband is crazy).

    Thanks everyone!

How are the driving conditions right now?

i can%26#39;t speak for I-10 northwest of kerrville, but everything south of kerrville is just fine. the roads here in SA are dry...no more ice! it melted rather fast yesterday. come on! the roads are fine here.

How are the driving conditions right now?

Good to know! Thanks :) Its still freezin up here :)

  • where in Houston is Rice?

I will be in Houston in March for a brief stay to tour Rice University with my son. What would be a convenient location to stay for this visit?

    where in Houston is Rice?

Rice Uni is between the Rice Village and medical center, here is a map (rice village is between kirby and greenbriar and the uni is from there on before the medical center area) :

    ricevillageonline.com/maps/houston_area.php

U can easily stay at the Galleria neighborhood, only minutes to the uni or stay in the medical area which has a marriott or at the museum district (next to medical area) is hotel zaza (which was the warwick before the name changed and renovation, it did need some updating and now it is quite nice !!!).

    Good Luck

PS. there are also a few choices in West U for lodging

    where in Houston is Rice?

My recommendation would be to stay in the Galleria area as there are more things to do in the evening. I%26#39;m assuming you%26#39;ll have a car while you%26#39;re in Houston as that%26#39;s pretty much the only way to get around most of the city.

If you don%26#39;t have a car and pretty much just want to spend time at Rice U then you might want to consider staying at the hotel Zaza (used to be called the Warwick), it%26#39;s within walking distance to Rice U and to the museums (MFA, HMNS, etc.) and right on the light-rail line connecting downtown Houston and the Medical Center.

I wouldn%26#39;t recommend staying in the Medical Center per se as the hotels are a bit dodgier...

Hmmm... well, I don%26#39;t know about the neighborhood anymore, but if it were me I%26#39;d stay in the Marriott or Hilton or some other nicer hotel in the medical center area. Just my opinion. Reason being... depending on what your son is doing (interviewing? sitting in on a class? speaking with professors?) you may find it convenient to have a hotel room within very short walking distance.

If you look at the Rice Campus Map:

    http://www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html

you%26#39;ll see that visitor parking isn%26#39;t necessarily more convenient than walking across Main Street.

It seems to me that I have stayed in a hotel right across from entrance #4 by Sid Rich (Richardson) College but maybe I%26#39;m wrong about that. Things have a way of changing, and it%26#39;s been probably a good 12 years or so.

If you stay in areas farther away like the Galleria or downtown, you%26#39;ll lose a lot of the ';within the hedges'; feel about Rice... it%26#39;s a little world unto itself, with the Village and the Galleria accessible but not a daily part of life.

Good luck!! I hope your trip won%26#39;t coincide with Rice%26#39;s spring break!?

I found this link for you:

    http://explore.rice.edu/explore/Hotel.asp

(hope that works... if not, Google rice university hotels)

Apparently I%26#39;m not remembering correctly. My dad used to stay at The Warwick (now Hotel ZaZa) when he%26#39;d be in town visiting me (back in my Rice days) and I just don%26#39;t remember it being ';close';. Perhaps that%26#39;s because I never walked... those were some busy streets! It was always a drive, and with all of the one way streets it just didn%26#39;t seem all that easy. When my hubby interviewed in the medical center in 1994, we stayed in *some hotel* right across Main from Rice and I walked from the hotel through the entrance by either Sid Rich or Lovett College. I%26#39;m so frustrated that I can%26#39;t remember the hotel or that it%26#39;s not there anymore. It may have been on Fannin and for some reason I think it was a Holiday Inn. So just for my sanity, can any old timers confirm that something fitting that description ever existed? LOL

At any rate, the above link also mentions hotels that offer discounts for Rice visitors. I%26#39;m wondering if the distances they quote from those hotels are from the hotel to the Main Entrance, because that%26#39;s not really right. You don%26#39;t need to walk all the way to the Main Entrance.

As another Rice Alumn, let me say that to get a real feel for the campus its far better to pick up a hotel near to campus (Medical Center really). The Galleria is very nice and there is lots to do when you%26#39;re there, but I can say in my 4 years at Rice I went to the Galleria very rarely - there was just much more intrest in staying on campus.

Best of luck to your son on his visit/interview!

My daughter has an audition at Sheppard School of Music (Rice University) on March 2. If you go to the Rice website there were a number of hotels listed with special Rice University rates, you just need to tell them you are visiting Rice for that special rate. They list the contact 3s for the Hotels %26amp; the distance from Rice.

We are staying at the Best Western Inn- Medical Center for $90.47 per night.

    Good luck!

    Marty

    BigBadFisher -

I completely agree with what you said about the Galleria, but it%26#39;s been awhile since I was a student (that would be the ';84'; part of my screenname) there so I thought maybe things had changed. Heck, I just about fell over when I saw a Gap in the Village! TRGs must definitely be different now. LOL. No more overalls?

In the four years I was at Rice, I went to the Galleria maybe about six times. And I had a car, which I drove maybe twice a week. So that%26#39;s why I%26#39;ve been suggesting the OP stay in the medical center; you get a much better feel for the ';Rice Community'; and the campus atmosphere if you forego the driving during the visit.

having been a West U resident for 5 years, i was a frequent visitor to the rice village and around Rice U for the nice running paths as well as of course, to the medical center area for check ups (with 2 kids, even more trips !). I have never once thought it a dodgy place !

Mind u, this is a very big area and if u go as far as Old Spanish trail then yes I agree the neighborhood starts to do down from there but anything near the Rice U are all of good standing and repute !

    Girls Trip to Corpus Christi

We are just starting to plan a girls trip to Corpus Christi at the end of July and don%26#39;t know much about the area. We are interested in the beach/spa/shopping during the day %26amp; walking/short cab to nightlife (bars %26amp; clubs). There will be 4-8 of us (late 20%26#39;s/early 30%26#39;s) either in 2 hotels rooms or any type of beach condo/house.

Any suggestions? What about South Padre Island? Any advice is appreciated!

    Girls Trip to Corpus Christi

Corpus has a bit of a nightlife scene Downtown, but not much. Also, it isn%26#39;t on the beach, but instead on a bay. The beach is about 25 miles away.

South Padre would probably be more up your alley. You can also look into Port Aransas.

    hth

    Girls Trip to Corpus Christi

They are trying to revamp the downtown area and currently, that is the only ';night life'; scene. The problem is that part of town is run-down, the buildings are falling apart....and they sit there...empty. That area is full of transients....there has been shootings and gang activity around there...wouldn%26#39;t want to walk around there at night! There are a few shops, but nothing worth coming here on a trip for shopping. Me %26amp; my girlfriends go to San Marcos to shop... there is about 2 days worth of shopping the outlet malls all designer stores, every label you can imagine at super-cheap prices.

We have 2 malls here (in Corpus), one of which has more space available for lease than stores. And it is nothing extraordinary. We don%26#39;t have any good spas here either, I%26#39;ve found them all very disappointing.

    Conclusion: Go to South Padre.

    (Check http://www.peninsulaislandresort.com) for spa stuff

Another way we like to find neat ';secret'; places to stay is http://www.vrbo.com so we can all stay in a house or condo together.

You could even take a day and drive to Progresso, Mexico (about an hour drive) Park on the U.S. side, walk across and shop to your heart%26#39;s content for bargains while sipping margaritas the whole time! Its a blast!

Thanks - looks like we need to go to South Padre!

  • Trip to Longview

    Hello there

We are just in the planning stages of our trip to Longview in March 2007 we will use this as a base; maybe heading off somewhere for a few days at a time. We are staying with the son of our friends, we don’t know him that well and do not want to impose too much on him. We would like as much information about getting around as possible before we get there. I am the only driver and do not want to be driving all of the time so knowing where we can go on public transport would be really useful. Our interests are the Civil War and the West but if anyone knows of anything that we shouldn’t miss that would be great.

    airey

    Trip to Longview

I don%26#39;t know much about Longview, but I can tell you that it%26#39;s no where near public transport - Longview is in East Texas about 2 hours from Dallas (where public transit is available).

I know there is a Civil War site near Mansfield, Louisiana - about an hour from Longview.

Sounds like you%26#39;d enjoy Ft. Worth - about 3 hours from Longview. It%26#39;s more cowboy-like. The Stockyards area would interest you.

Try this site for more info on Texas:

    http://www.traveltex.com/

    Trip to Longview

I live in Longview Texas, so suffice to say I consider myself somewhat of an expert.

The Daily Amtrak train runs through Longview, and this does run to Ft. Worth TX. You can check Amtrak.com for more information on it, this would serve as a great platform on any visits you might want to make.

If you are coming on March, and would enjoy theme park type activities, then Six Flags is a great day trip from Longview, about 2 hrs there, and 2 hrs back. If you have small children and a budget, I advise stollers due to lots of heavy walking.

If you have any questions, email me at jbl594@gmail.com, I can let you in on some smaller things that take up less time!

    Yay!!

Somebody who knows Longview...I had no idea the Amrak went through there.

Have you been to Vicksburg, MS? That is a great national military park- very interesting for Civil War buffs. It is a straight shot down I-20 from Longview- about a 4 hour drive, maybe a good overnight trip? There are quite a few historic homes and tours there as well. Shreveport and Vicksburg both have gambling if you are into that.

Longview has some public transportation a metro bus service and taxi%26#39;s are available. If you enjoy history take a day trip to Jefferson about 30 minute drive. There you will find an city time forgot with beautiful plantation homes, museums shops and paddle wheel boats that cruise the river. East Texas is known for its natural beauty if you are lucky March should bring a flush of spring flowers along with dogwood trees in full bloom. Longview its self was primarily a oil and gas town hitting its hey day during the depression era. Letourneau University has a nice museum dedicated to there namesake. Kilgore college has an excellent museum dedicated to the boom. They have recreated the oil and gas days in an impressive way.

Driving in East Texas is low stress long FM roads little to no traffic. It is very hard to get lost even if your trying. No spagetti bowl of highways. If you enjoy country music drive out to Carthage (30Mi) and Visit the country music Hall of fame dedicated to Tex Ritter and managed primarity by his granddaughter.

You can contact the visitors center and find numerous things to do in Longview. Enjoy your trip! If there is anything I can help with

Thank you for the info. Octoboy!

It looks like we won%26#39;t have the best weather this weekend but we will make the best of it!

You%26#39;ll have to watch the roads this weekend. If there is even a hint of frozen precipitation and the city will shut down. Downtown will be fine, especially the Riverwalk area. It%26#39;s just that we have no experience or equipment for ice down here.

It looks like the COLD weather will hold off until Monday afternoon - you should be in fine shape.

    Hi, mikmik.

Are you back from your trip to San Antonio? How was it?

This may be a little late but maybe you can use for next time.

Personally, the best Japanese restaurant in SA is Koikawa%26#39;s on Broadway, next to Incarnate Word University. I%26#39;ve been in Japan for over 20 years, so I know I can trust my taste buds on this one.

    Central Texas Retreat Center Suggestions

Does anyone have a suggestion for a retreat involving about 30 couples? I need lodging and meeting space, and I need it to be near Killeen (at least within a short drive).

    Thanks!

    Central Texas Retreat Center Suggestions

I%26#39;ve never been to any of these places, so I can%26#39;t give any endorsements.

I%26#39;ve seen Moon River Ranch advertised pretty regularly in the Waco area:

    http://www.moonriverranch.com/MRR1.htm

It%26#39;s probably an hour, maybe an hour and a half from Killeen.

    .

There%26#39;s also Summers Mill, between Belton and Salado:

    http://www.summersmill.com/

The Diocese of Austin (Catholic) maintains Cederbrake in Belton:

    www.austindiocese.org/department_home.php鈥?/a>

I%26#39;ve actually had friends go to Cedarbrake for retreats and enjoy them, but the feedback I%26#39;ve gotten back has been about the retreat and not the location.

That%26#39;s all I can think of for now, but maybe that%26#39;ll get you started.

  • Very reasonably priced hotels near Uptown area

I am hoping to visit for a long weekend sometime and April and would like to find a hotel near the uptown area. It seems the hotels directly in that area are going to be too expensive as I%26#39;m looking for close to or %26lt;100 a nite.

So, if folks can name a few options/suggestions that would be great. I understand that there are probably many options nearby on a highway (75?), but can%26#39;t determine which hotels they might be.

    thanks!

On I-75 there%26#39;s a La Quinta just south of Henderson. And a Best Western just south of Fitzhugh. They might have ';Cityplace'; in their hotel name.

Meeting at the Adams Mark in downtown dallas

My husband and I will be in dallas for the week of March 16. He will be attending a conference at the Adams Mark for the latter part of the week. I have been reading all the reviews and they seem quite negative about the adams mark. I have been prcing hotels in other areas and can get a room on the expressway (10 miles from downtown) at half the price. My question is would you recommend staying on the expressway and renting a vehicle to get around or stay at downtown hotel and not rent a vehicle. We don%26#39;t want to spend too much money so renting and downtown are pretty much out of question.

I don%26#39;t usually look at the reviews...so I had to, to see what the deal is. That%26#39;s some bad stuff at Adam%26#39;s Mark. What rate are you being quoted/night?

You could still stay downtown - try Magnolia, which gets good reviews...or Indigo, which was a Holiday Inn that recently been renovated.

Or you could stay across from Mockingbird Station - where you can catch the DART train and zip into downtown - at the Palomar Hotel...also is getting great reviews.
