My son and I have to be in Houston for some testing Jan 14-20. We were told by people at the clinic that the Homestead Hotel on Fannin is good, clean and safe. And it%26#39;s next door to the testing facilitie...What is your opinion...also is there grocery shopping close by???

Here are Trip Advisor%26#39;s traveler reviews for this hotel:
tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g56003-d2177鈥?/a>
Notice: that there are only two reviews in the last 1-1/2 years. Plus the hotel is #211 out of 339 hotels in Houston.
Consider, instead, Springfield Suites (a Marriott property) just 3-1/2 blocks from the Homestead Hotel. It%26#39;%26#39;s a 3-star hotel, ranked #7 out of 339 hotels in the city by your fellow travelers

Of course, this hotel is more expensive than the other.
Also nearby, at a more economical price is the Holiday Inn Express. Info at:

Good luck with the testing!

Thanks for asking this question. We have to take our young daughter to Texas Children%26#39;s every two months or so. We%26#39;ve stayed at the Rodeway Inn, which is two steps above a dive. (But the $70 price cannot be beat.) Now we will watch your posting to see if anyone has any experience with other hotels since I%26#39;ve hit my tolerance limit.
One nice thing about staying next to the medical facility is that you do not have to drive and park. Driving/parking in that area can be horrible. Parking in the medical center%26#39;s parking is also expensive. But, if you can find a hotel on the light rail line (which stops at the medical center -- ask the clinic if the stop is close by since the medical center is mind-bogglingly HUGE), check if there is a stop near your hotel.
I don%26#39;t recall seeing any grocery stores there.
Go to the zoo in Hermann Park! If your son is young enough, he will love the kiddo area. Get one of those tourist maps, which will have a coupon for a dollar off each admission.
I did call this Holiday Inn Express and they do give rates for patients going to the MedCenter...All you have to provide is a patient ID number. We%26#39;re paying $79. 2 queen beds, micro. frid. and laundry facilites. I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s too far for. I also found there is a Kroger%26#39;s grocery store on Old Spanish Trail.
My son is 17, and he is more interested in checking out the Galeria...Although I would rether go to the park...

Let us know what you think of the hotel. We will probably book there next time in February, based on your experience.
The Galleria has a ice skating rink, at least.
Our favorite nearby place, besides the park and the zoo, is Rice Village. You won%26#39;t go hungry there, with the large selection of restaurants. Haven%26#39;t found a bad place yet.
Yes, I will let you know about the hotel. Pictures and reviews look good, but we all know how that goes sometimes..
Thanks for the info about Rice Village, we will check it out...
I told my son, that will that we probably need to stay close to the hotel...Read somewhere that the crime rate has really increased the past year. So we may only visit the Galaria once, but definately no ice skating.
Honestly, the Galleria did not impress us. We like window shopping more at Rice Village. You have to stop by the old five-and-dime with its ';Mozart Action Doll'; and other novelties in the window. Plus Rice Village seems completely safe, busy with neighbor folks and faculty at Rice.
Delmonico%26#39;s in Rice Village has a cheap yet worthwhile ';steam table'; special for $6 at lunch. We love that place, especially its crawfish ravioli.
Coffee at a French place in Rice Village (';Croissant'; something?) is great. They have a stack of newspapers to let you kill time.
Good luck. Still push for the zoo if it gets warm enough.
Be careful on Old Spanish Trail (OST) -- may be okay in the daytime but definitely dicey at night. You might go to grocery stores in the Rice Village/West U area and those would be better.
Thanks for all the info....Dont think we will do alot of driving around...Rice Village sounds like the perfect area for us to spend time...The weather isn%26#39;t looking good, but it%26#39;s close...
Let you know about the Holiday Inn....
JoJo, This Holiday Inn Express is very nice and for $79 medical rate, it%26#39;s great. We had a problem with the heater, didn%26#39;t work, they changed our room right away. Area is not that bad at all...1 block away is a super Target with grocery, next door is a CVS and across the street from that is a Krogers....This hotel also provides transportation to the Med Center. But not to our clinic, and the Reliant Center is in our way, and even though we only have 1/2 mile to drive, we have to go around Reliant....but all in all, I would recommend this hotel. Lots of places to eat and Rice Village is only 1- 11/2 away...went last night, but with the rain didn%26#39;t get out...Tomorrow the high will be 30 degrees, so no telling if we will even get out of the hotels...
Thanks for the feedback about the Holiday Inn Express. We will try it next month.
Delmonico%26#39;s in Rice Village is the place to go when it%26#39;s raining. Behind the restaurant is a parking garage. Just park and enter the restaurant through the back door.
Rice Village overall is a good place to hang out when it%26#39;s raining. Parking has always been easy (must be the odd times we go), and sometimes we%26#39;ve been able to park directly in front of our eatery. The French croissant place has a stack of newspapers (NYT and WSJ) to go along with good coffees and pastries.
But I don%26#39;t blame you for not wanting to drive in this weather. What a mess.
