Requirements to get into Mexico???

I actually have one more question....I%26#39;ve heard that one HAS to have a passport to be able to go over to Mexico...is this true, or will a driver%26#39;s liscence work? What about a birth certificate or even a social security card???

If you are traveling by air, you will have to have a passport beginning January 23. If you are traveling by land or sea, the new requirement is not expected to go into effect before January 1, 2008. If you go to travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html, you will be able to see the requirements under the heading of New Requirements for Travelers.

If you do go into Mexico, be very, very careful and don%26#39;t go alone. It is not the safest place. Do some research before you attempt it.

If you are just walking across to Matamoros or Progreso, you need only show picture ID to US customs officials upon re-entry to the States. It can be a driver%26#39;s license. You are pretty safe on the main street in Progreso where all the shops and restaurants are, but we no longer go anywhere in Matamoros except Gracia%26#39;s Restaurant and gift shop.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice! I%26#39;ll be sure and research it...we really were only planning on going for a few hours to buy some cheap stuff to take home to our family and friends. The other 2 girls that I%26#39;m going with have never been out of the U.S. so they wanted to be able to say they went to Mexico. Anyhow...thanks again, everyone!!!

There are also organized college tours over to Matamorros with US staff that is bilingual. You can easily find one once you arrive in South Padre.
